I have 2 tattoos. One on my lower back that has angel wings in memorandom of my mama, and the other one is a butterfly which represents many things, but mainly freedom. I do want to get at least one more in the center of my back. My tattoos don’t really represent rebellion but art, I suppose. They also represent different times in my life. I love writing creatively, as well, as opposed to essays, which generally bore me to tears. I’m all about expression, and tattoos are a great way to express myself. by Janella Smith

I always thought it was interesting that people feel the need to have a “reason” behind having a tattoo. I got mine because I like them. That’s pretty much it.
But at first, that embarrassed me. I felt the pressure because everyone would ask me, “what are they for? what do they mean?”. I totally buckled and I came up with something that seemed to satisfy their need for me to have thought out my decision in a way that makes permanently altering my body more rational or acceptable or whatever. Ultimately, I came to realize that even though I may not always be the person who got tattoos, I don’t want to forget the time that I was. It’s been six years, and I still love them, and I’m definately getting more.

This is also the first time i have ever seen anything like this. I think it is a good idea but for someone like me who doesn’t like tatoos i would never get it.

So then, which tattoo was it? Actually I got my first tattoo with music in mind. I chose to follow the 60’s by copying Janis Joplin and getting a heart on the inside of my hip. She wan the first woman in Rock and Roll to have a tattoo. Granted it’s not the same heart, but that is definately where i put the meaning.

Well my name is Jon-Paul and I’m interested in the psychology behind a person getting a tattoo. When I was younger I always thought that tattoos were hideous and weird looking. I thought only gang members, robbers, and dirty pirates had them. That isn’t the case, there are many good hearted individuals who are creative and artistic. I realized that the media and my peers brainwashed me into thinking that only bad guys sported tattoos. What’s the concept behind getting one? Is it wanting to belong to something? Is it expressing oneself? Is it wanting people to visually see what one’s interests are? Is it Rebelling? Creativity? Boredom?

Ok so I have a tatoo that I have had put on my body when I was 19 years old. At the time is was exactly where I wanted it and what I wanted. It ment something to me, was it special, no but it represented me at that time in my life. I have to admitt I went with the “in” design of that time, the butterfly which till this day all that I tell what my tatoo is always has the same reaction “OH THAT DESIGN” as if to say, “you are not different just the blend of what the society says is the fav or the hottest thing you should be (or to have)”. I have to disagree because to me the butterfly means freedom and growth, I mean the butterfly didn’t just become a butterfly it transformed from different stages in its life time. So I don’t regreat getting a tattoo on my body although i do regreat where I have it on my body and the size.
